An attempt to restore a copy of baroque artist Bartolomé Esteban Murillo’s The Immaculate Conception of Los Venerables has turned its beatific Virgin Mary into a misshapen lump with red lips.
Immediately drawing comparisons to the viral “Beast Jesus” restoration fail of 2012, this latest attempt by an amateur restorer is prompting experts in Spain to call for more stringent regulations.
The anonymous owner of the marred Murillo work paid €1,200 ($1,350) for it to be cleaned by a furniture restorer, Europa Press reported, and was outraged when not one, but two attempts resulted in a complete disfiguration.
María Borja, a vice president of the Valencia chapter of the Professional Association of Conservative Restorers of Spain, told the outlet that while a handful of these incidents come to wide attention because of social media, “there are a multitude of situations where the works are intervened by people without training… possibly causing irreversible change.”

Although the organization’s fundamental objectives include language that advocates for the preservation of cultural heritage, such as paintings, there is no specification for a professional conservation restorer to be commissioned. Speaking to the Guardian, former association president Fernando Carrera, who is a professor in conservation and restoration, said “I don’t think this guy—or these people—should be referred to as restorers… they’re bodgers who botch things up. They destroy things.”
“Can you imagine just anyone being allowed to operate on other people? Or someone being allowed to sell medicine without a pharmacist’s license?” Carrera added, noting that while he understands restorers are not as critical to society as doctors, “we need to focus society’s attention on this… this is our history.”
Other failed conservation attempts in recent history include the refurbishment of a 500-year-old statue of St. George at the Church of San Miguel de Estella in Navarre, Spain, which resulted in a Disneyfied makeover; the statue of Santa Barbara at Brazil’s Santa Cruz da Barra Chapel; and the 15th-century statue of Virgin Mary that was “restored” by a local woman in Asturias, Spain.

En Espagne, la restauration d’une peinture du Christ fait hurler (August 22, 2012)
Croix gammée dans une main, crucifix dans l’autre et cône orange sur la tête: tel est l’état dans lequel le Sacré-Cœur de Labrecque au Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean a été retrouvé lundi matin.
Le président de la paroisse (Fabrique) de Saint-Léon, Claude Vachon, déplore ce geste qui a été posé par de mauvais plaisantins. «C’est disgracieux, ça n’a pas d’allure», a-t-il commenté.
Il a confirmé au Journal qu’il allait porter plainte à la police.
Les employés de la localité ont retiré les objets qui ont été placés sur la statue ce matin.
Le monument est érigé dans un parc, devant l’église de la petite localité située à environ 30 minutes au nord-est d’Alma.

GRANDE-RIVIÈRE- Le cuisinier d’une habitation pour aînés de la Gaspésie a tranché une pomme de terre où se trouvait le symbole d’une croix, ce qui a causé tout un choc aux résidents.
Jeannette Moreau conserve précieusement la fameuse patate dans ses appartements de la Résidence La Rive à Grande-Rivière, où elle séchera avant d’être encadrée.
«On était tous sans mot», commente-t-elle, quelques jours après la découverte. «Pour moi, cette trouvaille, c’est une protection pour tout le monde ici», croit-elle.
Un signe pour le cuisinier
C’est en préparant le repas des résidents du lundi 22 août qu’Alain Lévesque a tranché la fameuse pomme de terre sur la longueur, ce qu’il n’a pas l’habitude de faire. «Je ne sais pas pourquoi j’ai tranché cette patate précisément dans ce sens-là. Mais quand elle s’est ouverte, je me suis dit, tabarouette, c’est une croix!», raconte l’employé.
«J’y ai vu un signe. J’ai vécu une grosse séparation. J’ai l’impression qu’Il est venu me dire :”Je suis là, j’existe, ne lâche pas”.»
Symbole
Cette trouvaille ne laisse personne indifférent à la résidence. Diana Beaudin, une autre employée de la cuisine, a encore la chair de poule. Elle affirmait toutefois qu’elle n’aurait pas aimé être celle qui tranche la pomme de terre ce jour-là.
«Je n’aurais pas su quoi penser de la signification de tout ça, si c’était tombé sur moi.»
Reste qu’elle a pu observer l’émotion et la surprise que la découverte du symbole à l’intérieur de la pomme de terre a pu créer chez les aînés. «Ça ne laisse personne indifférent, ça, c’est sûr.»
Émilien Morin, président du comité de la résidence, affirme de son côté que les 22 aînés sont toujours émerveillés, une semaine après la découverte. «Je crois que ça nous fait dire qu’il y aura de bonnes choses pour nous.»
Les résidents espèrent tous que la croix restera marquée à l’intérieur de la pomme de terre une fois séchée. Jeanne Moreau espère également pouvoir l’exhiber fièrement à l’évêque du diocèse.
